IOC fails to meet LPG demands

SHILLONG: Prospective LPG consumers in Shillong city have to put up with inordinate delay in getting their connection due to the inability of Indian Oil Corporation to meet consumer demands
Applications for new LPG gas connections are piling up in the different gas agencies. A consumer speaking to this scribe said he had applied for gas connection in December last year but is yet to be provided with one,.
“I applied for an LPG connection in December, 2010 but till date I have not received any intimation about the status of my application,” an aggrieved applicant said here.
This is not a solitary problem. Hundreds of prospective consumers in the city are awaiting their LPG connection.
Applying for a new LPG connection is a huge challenge for those who wish to switch over from the traditional mode of cooking on kerosine stoves or over charcoal fires.
It is learnt that when aggrieved consumers approach the dealing agencies for the status of their application, they are informed that it might take 3-4 years for them to get the connection.
When contacted, Deputy Commissioner (Supply) Jopthiaw Lyngdoh said that in the last meeting the IOC officials have already been asked to clear the backlog of pending applications at the earliest.
“Sometimes they say that they have a shortage of pressure regulators and some times shortage of cylinders. I have asked them to make the full package available for the consumers,” Lyngdoh added here on Monday.
It may be mentioned that earlier IOC was contemplating to set up a bottling plant in Shillong but the plan seems to have been aborted for unknown reasons.
