SHILLONG: The opposition supported by the Congress is set to capture power in the GHADC that will elect its CEM on Tuesday.
The ousted NPP has already given up its claim to return to power as its suspended MDC Boston Marak is likely to lead the new coalition supported by the Congress.
Though NPP has fielded a candidate to contest for the post of CEM, a party source said it does not have sufficient numbers to retain power.
While the Boston group has the support of 16 MDCs in the House of 29, the NPP-led group including the deputy chairman has only 13 members.
The government is yet to name the lone nominated member to the GHADC to make it 30. The election to the post of CEM was necessitated after the NPP-led Executive Committee led by Denang Sangma collapsed on March 31 before facing the no-confidence motion brought by the Congress-led opposition.
Later, the Cabinet recommended the imposition of administrator’s rule and the governor recently approved the cabinet order and fixed Tuesday for the election of CEM.
