SHILLONG: The Additional Director General of Police (CID), Meghalaya has urged the general public to not use secondhand mobile phones.
Instances of people buying second hand phones from unknown people at cheaper rates without verifying the purchase receipt and credentials of the seller have been reported lately.
In most of such cases, it is found that the mobile phones so purchased are stolen ones. It is also observed that people are randomly using pre-activated/black SIM cards, intentionally/unintentionally, which is illegal. General public are also advised to hand over the lost phones to the nearest police station.
However, in case of second hand mobile phones, they should first insist on Purchase Receipt as the person buying stolen mobile phones are liable U/S 411 of the Indian Penal Code and may face imprisonment for a period up to 3 years.
