KKUHA demands lifer for rape accused

SHILLONG: The Khun Kynthei U Hynniewtrep Association (KKUHA) has stressed on the need to come up with stringent laws to check crimes against women and children and demands to punish persons found guilty of committing rape with life imprisonment.

Addressing reporters on Friday, KKUHA president, R. Jyrwa said, “We have submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma demanding that strong laws should be framed and rapist should be punished with life imprisonment.”

The association has served a two months’ deadline to the Chief Minister with a demand that the state government should frame laws on this matter.

Baiahunlang Snaitang, general secretary of the KKUHA         said that the association planned to agitate if their demands were not met.

Jyrwa claimed that about 20 rape victims complained to the organization that they were deprived of benefits under the schemes of the government for rape victims.
