NEW DELHI: Congress on Friday went all out against Chief Minister Mayawati questioning her move to carve out four new states from Uttar Pradesh alleging it is a “political gimmick” to divert people’s attention from real issues just before the Assembly elections.

The party also said that it favoured constitution of the Second Reorganization Commission to address similar demands all over the country but sought to delink the issue of Telangana from it saying it’s an old issue and needs to be seen separtely.

Union Minister Pradeep Kumar Jain Aditya, who hails from Bundelkhand region of the state alleged the CM was trying to deflect people’s attention from the “biggest” issue of “loot” of public funds in MNREGA and NRHM in the state by making such announcements.

Terming the proposal to divide the state as a “political stunt”, he asked why no action was taken by the Mayawati Government on the issue during the last five years. “If the state should be divided why no action was taken on the proposal pending before assembly for last five years. This is an attempt to deflect people’s attention….It’s an election stunt. When she feels election is just round the corner, she talks about state’s division and raises other issues,” Jain said. Another Union Minister hailing from the state RPN Singh also ridiculed Mayawati’s move saying “this is nothing but a political gimmick of UP CM ahead of the Assemlby elections. (PTI)
