TURA: With less than seven months to go before the Assembly elections in Meghalaya, BJP has upped its ante against the Congress.
The party started its series of campaigns in Garo Hills on Monday afternoon with the youth wing — the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha — holding a car and bike rally from Asanang in Rongram to Dakopgre in Tura.
Senior BJP functionaries also joined the rally that focused on the party’s ‘pro-development’ policies.
Alleging widespread corruption in Meghalaya under the Mukul Sangma-led MUA Government, BJP functionaries said, “This is the beginning of the campaign to oust the Congress. We are going to go to the people and apprise them of the corruption being perpetrated in the State under the current regime,” said a senior party functionary as BJP youth members carrying party flags took part in the rally.
Senior BJP leader Jagdamba Mall, who is the Sangathan Mantri (organising secretary), also took part in the awareness campaign and later addressed party workers at the BJP office at Bokmagre.
The rally was led by BJP Kisan (farmers) Morcha general secretary for Garo Hills Chiang D Shira and state vice-president of Yuva Morcha Akki Sangma. State leader Edmund K Sangma also addressed the rally.
Meanwhile, the party has appointed Waldhim Sangma as the new district Yuva Morcha president of Tura city and Charles Sangma as president of East Garo Hills Yuva Morcha.
