SHILLONG: The Centre has sanctioned fund for Tura Medical College giving fillip to the project.
An official source said on Tuesday that the Centre recently sanctioned Rs 51 crore to start the project.
The Rs 189-crore Tura Medical College with 100 seats will come up on 100 acres in Doldegre, 8 km from Tura.
Officials of the Medical Council of India have already inspected the site.
The project includes construction of the college at Doldegre and upgradation of Tura Civil Hospital from the current 200 beds to 300.
As per the plan, the existing Tura Civil Hospital land will be used for construction of hostels, quarters for staff and other establishments for the proposed medical college.
West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi said though there is a court case related to the land at Tura Civil hospital, the High Court recently referred the matter to the district court.
The State Government had to wait for five years to start the project as the earlier site was abandoned though the foundation stone was laid in 2012 by Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh in the area under Balalgre and Jewilgre Nokmaship near Damalgre, which is around 25 km from Tura.
The detailed project report was considered by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in a meeting of the Empowered Committee (EC) on March 14, 2016.
However, the EC did not approve the land earmarked at a distance of 14.5 km from the existing district hospital as it was not complying with the MCI norms. This prompted the Government to identify the new site at Doldegre.
