Tura ISBT complete, awaits inauguration

SHILLONG: Meghalaya government has approved the ways for the overall management and functioning of the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Tura which though completed longtime back, is yet to be inaugurated and made operational.

West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Pravin Bakshi, said that the concept paper talked about how the ISBT would function and what would be its revenue model. He said a society would be constituted comprising of   officials of Meghalaya Transport Corporation, District Transport office, police and other wings of the Government to make the  ISBT functional

Bakshi further said that preliminary discussions for the operation of the ISBT had taken place with the stakeholders like tourists bus operators association and all were happy with the commissioning of the ISBT.

Traffic congestion in the overcrowded Tura town is  set to be reduced to a large extent with the State’s first interstate bus terminus (ISBT) is being completed finally  on the outskirts of the town.

The government will discuss about feeder services as the ISBT is located away from Tura and vehicles will be required to ferry passengers to and fro the ISBT. In addition, some small shops will also come up at the ISBT to cater to the passengers.

The Central government sanctioned Rs.45 crores for the project which covered 90 per cent of the total cost, while the NBCC provided the remaining 10 per cent. The ISBT would accommodate 50 buses at a time  plying to and from all corners of the State to Tura.
