GUWAHATI: In response to request from Assam chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal,   Government of India has removed restrictions on International roaming in Assam and North-East and directed the Licensed Service Providers to provide the facility to foreign subscribers.

Minister of State (independent charge) for Communications, Government of India Manoj Sinha informed this to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in a letter. The step is expected to boost tourists’ footfall in the state as well as the region.

Sonowal had earlier written to the Minister of State for Communications in March, 2017 to remove restrictions on international roaming in Assam and North East. Due to the restrictions on international roaming, foreign tourists and businessmen visiting North Eastern region had to face lot of inconvenience. This also discouraged foreign tourists from visiting in large number of destinations in the region and dissuaded foreign investors as well.
