SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills SP Davis N Marak has said ignorance of people is leading to an increase in cyber crime in the State.
Speaking at a prorgamme organised by Shillong College on the topic ‘Surf Smart’ and ‘Free Being Me’, the SP said people lack awareness on safe use of internet and other technology.
The senior police officer’s statement comes in the wake of rising number of cyber frauds in Meghalaya in the recent time.
Marak said in today’s world, information technology is part of everyone’s life but people hooked on to social media sometimes forget their responsibilities.
He urged the audience, which mostly comprised students, to take precautions while surfing the internet on laptop, PC or in their smart phone by installing updated antivirus and cautioned them against giving away personal details to unknown persons on social media.
On Scouts and Guides, the SP said, “Scouts and Guides can prepare children to become responsible adults and citizens and it’s an important extracurricular activity.”
“Academics alone will not help students to excel in life but what is more important is that the students need to have an all-round personality development which includes academics and extracurricular activities,” he added.
Meanwhile, he also assured that the District Police would continue their awareness programmes on drug abuse, human trafficking, crime against women and cyber crime in schools and colleges.
