SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills district administration is hoping for cent per cent Aadhaar enrolment by the end of this year.
Deputy Commissioner PS Dkhar said on Friday 28 per cent of the district’s population have been enrolled so far.
“Now we are getting requests for enrolment from Laban, Nongthymmai, Mawprem and other areas. The implementing agency (for Aadhaar) has planned 100 percent enrolment in the district by the end of this year,” he added.
The enrolment in Mawlai is almost over and now the team there will be sent to other localities.
The implementing agency has 18 teams and recruitment is still going on for 16 teams.
According to Dkhar, once the full team is deployed, the enrolment process will be further expedited.
The enrolment for Aadhaar was delayed in Meghalaya following opposition by pressure groups who wanted the Government to create awareness on the initiative before enrolling people.
However, there is no objection to the Aadhaar now and the enrolment is going on smoothly in all parts of the district.
The need for Aadhaar becomes important after the Centre made the unique identification number mandatory in almost all the official works, including applying for scholarships and opening of bank accounts.
