SHILLONG: The city’s two busiest junctions, Khyndailad and , is a nightmare for pedestrians.
Heavy traffic and growing number of hawkers are among the reasons behind the congestion in these two thoroughfares.
Khyndailad, the commercial hub of Shillong, is frequented by thousands of people every day and pedestrians have to risk their lives to cross the junction dodging vehicles.
On the other hand, Keating road and the entire stretch from Jail Road Petrol Pump till Khyndailad remains crowded.
Though the road is narrow, it remains busy as vehicles ply on the road besides hundreds of pedestrians also walk. In addition, hawkers are also found to be sitting on the road blocking a part of it.Apart from Khyndailad, Motphran is another junction where there are more hawkers than individuals and vehicles literally have to ply through the crowd while hawkers sit on the road.
Commuters have to stand on the road for public transport since it is the last destination for buses and the presence of a parking lot in the area has further worsened the situation.
An official of the Meghalaya Police said nothing much can be done at the two junctions at the moment since the matter pertaining to the hawkers is pending in the High Court.
“We will have to wait for a court order and something can be done only after the court’s order,” the police official said.
