SHILLONG: A girl child was found abandoned on a footpath at 101 Area in Upper Shillong on Sunday.
Residents of the area, however, were quick in alerting 108 Ambulance Service to take the child to Ganesh Das Government Maternity and Child Health Hospital.
Hospital sources said the baby, aged around three years, was admitted in the pediatric ward of the hospital on Sunday evening.
“The baby, when admitted, was malnourished. She is out of danger now,” a source in the hospital said.
The child is being treated in a unit of the ward where malnourished children are given extra nutritious food, the source added. She is under observation of a medical officer.
East Khasi Hills superintendant of police Davis Marak said the girl, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, appeared to be of mixed parentage.
Police have written to Meena Kharkongor, chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, apprising her of the child’s condition. The matter has also been informed to the Child Welfare Committee.
While the actual reason for the child’s abandonment is yet to be known, it is suspected that poverty might have led the parents to take the step.
