SHILLONG: City Police is concerned over the rising trend of posting and sharing objectionable explicit content online on individual persons as well as spreading wild rumours on social media platforms such as Facebook and Whatsapp.
SP (City) Vivek Syiem said recently a post was made in a Facebook group of a girl charging money for sex.
“The profile picture of the girl with explicit content was passed around causing distress to the girl and her family,” he said.
Police have asked persons having information on any racket to report the matter for verification and taking action. Police sources say some persons are unscrupulously spreading such posts without any verification of the matter.
An FIR has been lodged at Rynjah police station and a case taken up against the Facebook group and persons making the post.
The City SP said such irresponsible posts could
cause immense harm to the person who is being targeted and that such acts were punishable by law.
“The general public is advised to refrain from vilifying persons using social media,” Syiem said.
