JOWAI: The Ladrymbai-Jowai and the Mowkaiaw Tourist Taxi Associations have accused the Jowai Traffic Police for extorting them for the past few months.
The associations alleged that the Jowai Traffic Police (JTP) led by Inspector DH Pde summoned the presidents to his office and demanded donations in favour of JTP for conducting various social programmes.
“We have been donating to the JTP during cleanliness drive on many occasions as per their demand. However, on two occasions, we failed to pay Rs 1000 as demanded and now the traffic police have started creating problems for drivers,” the association presidents told media persons here.
“When the officer in charge summoned us, we were ready to donate Rs 500 but he demanded Rs 1000 instead. This is a forced donation as the police here has fixed the amount,” they added.
The Traffic Police has conducted cleanliness drive and tree plantation involving students of various schools in Jowai and had collected huge sum of money in the pretext of donation. The drivers’ associations have urged higher authorities to look into the matter as it has affected their daily earning.
