Guwahati: The final peace pact between the government of India and the tribal militant outfit United Peace Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) will be signed at the national capital later this week.
Announcing this here on Monday, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said, ”The peace treaty with the UPDS will be signed in New Delhi on November 25.”
Asked whether all contentious issues between the two sides have been resolved, Gogoi said, ”Some way must have been worked out, otherwise there won’t have been any final pact.”
He added that the pact will be signed between the UPDS representative and the government of India.
”I shall be present on the occasion onl a witness,” the chief minister said.
The UPDS was formed in March 1999 with the merger of two militant outfits of Karbi Anglong district. It entered into peace negotiations with the government since May 2003.
The outfit had been demanding greater power for the Karbi Anglong council.
On peace process with other militant outfits, he said the government’s doors were always open for negotiations.
Gogoi pointed to the Maoists’ ‘inability’ to penetrate much into the state due to the vigilant stand of the government.
”The Maoists have been attempting to enter since 2006 but they have not been able to spread their wings much due to our tough measures,” he added. (UNI)
