MAWKYRWAT: South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner R Lyngdoh has issued an order allowing butchers here to temporarily slaughter in their own houses but following cleanliness directives.
The butchers’ association here had stopped selling beef and pork from August 1 in protest against the earlier directive on slaughtering.
The DC had prohibited slaughtering at Mawkyrwat market that had caused inconvenience to people due to the smell and waste. At present, butchers are taking the cattle to the slaughter house in Hilland, 15 km from Mawkyrwat.
In the new directive, the administration said butchers have to be careful that the smell does not trouble neighbours and wastes should not be thrown into water sources.
“Slaughtering at Mawkyrwat village or Mawkyrwat Market will not be allowed,” the order read.
“However, the butchers can slaughter in their own place but they should clean all wastes and make sure that the smell does not cause problem or affect the health of neighbours and the waste should not flow into the water sources,” it added.
