Spl survey on Indo-Bangla railway link soon

Agartala: A special survey will be conducted for establishing railway link between Agartala and Akhaura in Bangladesh, officials said on Tuesday.

Chief Engineer of the NF Railway Mohan Lal met Tripura Chief Secretary SK Panda on Monday and a discussion was held regarding the progress of the laying of railway tracks in the state, Special Secretary of state transport department Kishore Ambuli said after a discussion with the North East Frontier Railway officials on the progress of laying the line for the project.

Earlier in June, an eight-member delegation of Indian Railway Board had finalised the proposed railway link between Agartala and Akhaura via Gangasagar in Bangladesh.

The Indian Railway ministry has approved Rs 267 crore for laying of the 16-km railway track to connect Agartala with Akhaura.

While the Ministry of DoNER has paid Rs 105 crore for construction of the track on the Indian side, the rest of the amount will be paid by the Indian Railway ministry for laying tracks on the Bangladesh side, Mohan Lal had said.

The Indian Railway Construction Company (IRCON) will execute the project, under which six km falls on the Indian side and 10 km in Bangladesh soil.

Mohan Lal also informed the Chief Secretary that 42-km long railway track to connect Agartala with Udaipur, the district headquarter of South Tripura, would be completed by 2012 end. (PTI)
