TURA: Incessant rains since Thursday have resulted in flooding at several places in Garo Hills with the worst affected Baghmara town in South Garo Hills facing the onslaught of the rising waters of the mighty Simsang river.
The entire Baghmara market has remained submerged in flood water since Saturday morning while many other parts of the district are facing a similar situation.
According to district officials, Baghmara town, Karukol, Dimapara, Gasuapara areas have been flooded since Saturday morning and landslides and flood have caused road blockades at several points. A large number of houses including Baghmara police station building have been damaged due to mud slides. Meanwhile, Several dozen inhabitants living in the flood affected areas of South Garo Hills have been moved to relief camps in the district in view of the continuous rainfall and rising level of flood waters on Saturday.
The flood situation has compelled the district authorities to move out villagers from 22 households in Dangshubill village , eight households from Bandapara and two households from Mankengre village since their homes have been inundated.
All the affected people have been evacuated to relieve camps set up at Dimapara and Bandapara schools.
As many as three landslides have occurred along the main highway connecting Barengapara with Baghmara at places in between Dimapara to Jatrakona although vehicles are managing to move through, according to officials stationed in Baghmara.
However, the main ròad from Dimapara to Barengapara and Dimapara to Kharonggre have been cut off at Chandapara due to the Bugai river overflowing its banks and inundating the road.
Authorities have been unable to undertake further assessment in the flood affected areas of Ruga region because of the bridge linking the area getting submerged at Gandugre village.
The incessant rains which have been lashing the entire Garo Hills region since Thursday has resulted in major parts of Baghmara town being submerged by the rising waters of the mighty Simsang river.
The entire Baghmara market has been flooded and even the main building of the police station has been hit by a mudslide.
