SHILLONG: Continuous rainfall in the state for the past five days has wreaked havoc in capital city of Shillong as well other parts of the East Khasi Hills district.
After the tragic incident on Saturday, where a massive tree in Raj Bhavan campus uprooted resulting in death of three people in Shillong, a landslide occurred at the newly-built shorter road from Police Bazar to Polo. Blocking the road on Sunday morning.
Officials from the district administration said that the landslide occurred early Sunday morning and debris was cleared later afternoon. No one was injured in incident.
A minor incident was also reported in Lad Mawphalng on the way to Sohra where a portion of a road collapsed.
Officials informed that the Forest department had been directed to go around different parts of the city on Sunday to look for any vulnerable and weak trees and branches.
Officials said that directives had been issued to the Forest department to chop off any weak tree and its branches in the city.
Meanwhile, a driver on the busy Shillong-Umiam Road reveals that there are plenty of massive trees which are hanging dangerously on the road and posing a risk for the commuters.
A review meeting would be held at the Deputy Commissioner level later this week to take stock of the damages and the preventive measures following the large number of rain related incidents have been reported in the capital city and its outskirts.
Just few weeks back, a tree branch along with electric wires fell on a Government owned SPTS bus and some cars near St Mary’s College.
There was a similar incident few days back, when the guard wall of the Shillong College collapsed on the road. No one was injured in the incident.
A summary weather report issued by the Metrological Centre, Shillong says that Shillong received 65.4 mm of rainfall from August 8 to August 11 whereas Sohra, the wettest place on earth received a massive 243.4 m of rain during the period.
It also says that heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places August 14 and 15 over Meghalaya.
