Tripura: In absence of supply of potable drinking water in bordering Ratannagar village of Gandacherra in Dhalai district has spread water-borne disease and took a serious turn. According to villagers, the authority is yet to ensure safe drinking water in the village and as a result, hundreds of people drinking contaminated water throughout the year. The situation turns worst due to heavy monsoon shower this time, as all the open water sources were directly contaminated with flowing water. Ratannagar, a village at Indo-Bangladesh border is inhabitated by Tripuri and Chakma tribes. The inhabitants had to lead a struggling life due to the lack of many basic facilities. Phani Tripura alleged that, “For years together we have to quench our thirst with stream water. Safe drinking water and good road connectivity have remained a distant dream for us. And so every year we are stricken with water-borne diseases. But no permanent solution is made yet.” About the plight of the inhabitants, the Chairman of Ratannagar Village Panchayat Kalabi Chakma admitted the fact and informed, “The Drinking Water and Sanitation department has set a mini deep tube-well in the market are but it is not enough to provide water to all 600 families.” UNI
