SHILLONG: Consumers all over the State are set to face power cuts once again as the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has resorted to unscheduled load shedding.
The Public Relations Officer of MeECL, Shillong, in a statement said that the MeECL is compelled to resort to unscheduled load shedding especially during peak load hours (4:00PM to 10:00PM) in the whole State.
The step has been taken by MeECL in view of the sudden increase in demand of power on account of the onset of winter besides the fast depletion of water level at the Umiam Reservoir.
According to MeECL, all efforts are being made to reduce the load shedding duration to the minimum by power purchase to the maximum extent possible.
Meanwhile, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has asked the MeECL to refrain from load shedding in view of the ongoing school and college examinations.
“The MeECL should refrain from load shedding as many students are studying for their school final exams and load shedding would adversely affect their studies,” KSU general secretary Hamlet Dohling said.
