SHILLONG: After days of tension and misunderstanding, the Dorbar Shnong of Mylliem and Seng Khasi have finally decided to jointly identify a plot of land at Mylliem village which will be used as a cremation ground for the Seng Khasi community.
Tension flared up in Mylliem on August 11 as the residents of Madan Iing Syiem, Mylliem had opposed the cremation of the president of the Sengbah ki Nongshat Nongkhein, Kulam Nongrum, at the cremation ground.
The cremation, according to the residents, was in violation of the agreement signed between the Seng Khasi and the Dorbar Shnong in 2010 that barred cremations near the residential area.
East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner PS Dkhar on Thursday summoned both the Rangbah Shnong and the Seng Khasi members to discuss and amicably resolve the matter.
The meeting was also attended by the Syiem of Mylliem besides the district superintendent of police and other government officials.
Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, Dkhar said both the parties have decided to maintain law and order and restrain from making any remarks against each other.
“They would work together to see that peace prevails in the village,” the deputy commissioner said, even as he issued a strong warning to both parties that their members would booked if there were any law and order problems in the village.
He said the district administration would also step in to help find a location for a permanent cremation ground for the Seng Khasi.
He further urged the village authorities in Mylliem to communicate with each other (Dorbar Shnong and Seng Khasi Mylliem) during times of hardship in the area.
Meanwhile, the president of Seng Khasi Mylliem, R. Rynjah informed that during a grand dorbar at Mylliem on August 20, he would highlight their discussions with the deputy commissioner to the people attending the dorbar.
