SHILLONG: In an indication that incidents of crime are on the rise in Meghalaya, more than 1400 cases of cognizable crimes have been registered under various Sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) in first five months of the current year.
Crime statistics available with Meghalaya Police disclose that 1450 cognizable crimes have been registered in the state during January to May this year including 43 rape cases and two cases of gang rape.
In addition, there were nine cases of attempt to commit rape registered under (Sec.376/511 IPC) during the period. There were 42 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty.
Apart from cases of crime against women, there were 44 cases of murder ((Sec.302 IPC) and 20 cases of attempt to murder (Sec.307 IPC) registered in the same period this year in the state.
The instances of abduction and kidnapping also seems to be on the rise in Meghalaya as 63 such cases were reported during the period. As many as 359 cases of theft too have been registered during the period in the state
Comparative statistics revealed that in the year 2015, a total of 3366 Cognizable Crimes under IPC were registered in the state in the year 2015 while the figure for the year 2016 is 4079 cases.
