TURA: One of Tura’s senior citizens and a former Inspector General (IG) of the Border Security Force, Rajinder K Thakur,  passed away in his sleep following a suspected cardiac arrest on Friday morning in the town. He was 74.

Late R K Thakur had a distinguished career in the BSF serving in various capacities in the north east, including Meghalaya. He was commandant of the Praharinagar and Dobasipara BSF battalions in Tura during the late 1980s and early 1990s and later went on to become a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the force in Shillong.

Later, he was promoted to Inspector General and retired as the BSF IG from the Siliguri sector of West Bengal.

Hailing from the state of Himachal Pradesh, he completed his graduation from Dharamshala and joined the BSF in 1962. He was known to be an excellent golfer. He married Anita K Sangma in 1977 and settled down in Tura where he was overseeing the construction of his home since last year.

He had been due to visit his ancestral village in Himachal Pradesh to attend the wedding of his niece on Saturday when tragedy struck. He leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter.
