SHILLONG: Taking strong cognizance of the cracks appeared on the earth’s surface in a market of Sohkymphor village in Jaintia Hills, the Mining and Geology department has asked the Deputy Commissioner of the district to put an immediate stop to mining activities in the area.
Deputy Chief Minister and in charge of Mining and Geology, Bindo M Lanong, on Thursday said, “I have asked the Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner to immediately stop any further mining in the area.”
A fear psychosis has gripped the villagers ever since several cracks appeared on the earth’s surface at Sohkymphor village.
A PWD road that connects Sohkymphor-Shangpung via Byrwai village was also damaged due to the cracks that suddenly appeared in the middle of the road. Local residents believe that the cracks have appeared due to the rampant unscientific mining prevalent in the district.
“I am yet to receive an official report but it seems that the cracks are serious and have to be dealt with immediately,” Lanong added.
According to Lanong, the department is taking necessary steps to ensue that no catastrophe takes place in the area due to the mysterious cracks.
Besides the cracks on the ground, several cracks were also seen in some buildings around the market.
“The issue is serious and it seems that the cracks have appeared due to mining in the area,” he added while stating that he is waiting for an official report in the matter.
Interestingly, it is learnt that few years back the Dorbar Shnong of Sohkymphor village had banned mining of coal near the residential area.
The Deputy Chief Minister also stated that he would soon visit the area to inspect the cracks.
