Crime graph on the rise in Meghalaya

SHILLONG: The crime graph is on the rise in Meghalaya with more than 1,400 cognisable cases registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code in the first five months of 2017.
Statistics available with the Meghalaya Police reveal that as many as 1,450 cognisable crimes have been registered in the state from January to May this year.
As many as 45 rape cases have been registered in the state till May, including two cases of gang rape.
In addition, there were nine cases of attempt to commit rape under (Sec. 376/511 IPC). Besides, there were 42 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty.
Apart from rapes, there were 44 cases of murder (Sec.302 IPC) and 20 cases of attempt to murder (Sec.307 IPC)
Instances of abduction and kidnapping also seem to be on the rise as 63 such cases were reported during the period. Besides, there were 359 cases of theft reported in the state.
Comparative data disclose that in the year 2015, as many as 4079 cognisable crimes under IPC were registered in Meghalaya, while in the year 2016, 3366 cases were registered.
