SHILLONG: The assault on Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar in New Delhi on Thursday has been condemned in the State.

Leader of the Opposition and NCP legislator, Conrad Sangma, while vehemently condemning the incident, said that the assaulter is perhaps not stable and it is a very isolated case.

“It actually showcased the person’s mindset in all probability,” he added.

While acknowledging that commoners are affected by price rise, Sangma said that it does not mean that one has to go all out against an individual. “Any single individual is not responsible for price rise which has many reasons to it,” he said.

Dipayan Chakraborty, general secretary, BJP echoed Sangma and said that the incident is condemnable and such an act is not acceptable in a Democracy.

“This is not the way to show one’s anger. It is true that the commoners are affected by price rise and black money stashed abroad but the public has the vote. The vote should be cast based on issues,” he said.

Urban Affairs Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh, said that there are hysterical people who get into this kind of situation. Stating that a minister is helpless when the system is ever changing, she said that one has also to understand that dynamically price rise is dependent on certain economic factors.

“This is unacceptable. Not a fair display of one’s discontentment. One cannot take the law into his own hands and assault a person like that as it amounts to showing disrespect to the office. One should uphold the tenets of Democracy,” Ampareen added.

Meanwhile, a college student said that the youth’s anger should not be seen as an act of “cowardice” as it is the voice of the commoners’ frustration.

“In UP, Rahul Gandhi was shown black flag by the supporters of Samajwadi party. Later, Union Minister Jitin Prasada kicked a Samajwadi Party supporter at the same venue. I want to ask our legislators: Is Prasada a hero?” he said.
