TURA: The former chairman of the disbanded ANVC-B outfit, Bernard Rimpu N Marak, is facing possible legal action from the largest clan among the Garos, the Chambugong Mahari, for allegedly impersonating as the Nokma of Tura Danakgre A’king and attempting to provide his registration for land patta documents.
The Chanbugong Mahari on Thursday submitted a written complaint to the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills seeking action against Marak.
“The illegal claim of Bernard Marak is highly condemnable. The Danakgre A’king belongs to the Chambugong clan and he (Rimpu) does not have any locus standi to claim as nokma of any part or any A’king or otherwise, as customary right prevails in Nokmaship. He does not belong to a nokma family of any existing A’king prevailing in Tura,” said Cary Chambugong Marak, who as the Chra of the Chambugong Mahari submitted the clan’s complaint to Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi.
The clan leaders pointed out that while the Danakgre A’king belongs to the Chambugong Mahari, the former ANVC-B chairman belongs to the Napak (N Marak) clan and has no authority to stake claim for nokmaship.
The Chambugong clan has also brought to the notice of the district administration Marak’s attempts to issue notices via social media directing citizens to bring in their land documents for fresh registration from his office. “He is circulating notices from a non-existent office called the Tura Nokma committee,” said Cary Ch Marak.
A copy of the notice that Marak was circulating has been handed over to the DC.
Marak is already under a restraining order from the district administration since March 23, 2015. It had directed Marak to abstain from asserting his authority as the Ex-Officio Nokma of Danakgre A’king till the time a clarification is sought from the Council of Nokmas, GHADC and the state law department.
