Agartala: Tripura has asked the central government to fence the actual border with Bangladesh so as to secure all markets, shrines and even government installations, an official said Friday.

According to international norms and an India-Bangladesh agreement, the barbed wire fencing has to be built 150 yards inside India from the zero line of the border.

But Tripura Chief Secretary Sanjoy Kumar Panda pointed out that in the process, “thousands of Indian homes, paddy fields, lands, farms and other assets had fallen outside the fence putting them in an awkward position.

“The Indian government in consultation with Bangladesh has been erecting fencing at the zero line in 13 places only along the 856 km Bangladesh border with Tripura,” he said.

Indian has been erecting a fence all along the 4,095-km India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram to check trans-border movement of militants, prevent infiltration and check border crimes. (IANS)
