SHILLONG: The 74th Martyrdom Day (Balidan Diwas) of Gorkha son Shaheed Major Durga Malla was observed in Shillong on August 25.
On this day in1944, Major Durga Malla of Indian National Army was hanged at Delhi Central Jail. He was only 31 years old. This day is observed as Balidan Diwas all over India by Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh. A debate competition was held for secondary and higher secondary students. C.M. Adhikari, president of the Parisangh spoke at the programme.
The programme started with the Jagran geet followed with lighting of lamp and floral tribute to the martyr. In his speech, the chief guest highlighted the contribution of Gorkha freedom fighters who laid their lives for the cause of the country. Secretary of the Parisangh, S.P. Adhikari urged the gathering to give befitting reverence to those who died for the cause. Saraswati Rai and Hari Prasad Joshi handed over the prizes to the winners and runners up of the competition.
