SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council has urged the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council to prepare a database of over 3000 trading licences of non-tribals to check rampant issuance of such licenses.
Speaking to reporters on Monday after meeting the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council chief PN Syiem, HYC general secretary Robert Kharjahrin said the autonomous district council had an important role in the issuance of trading licenses.
“Had the issuance of licences been properly checked, the burden of illegal immigration could have been lightened. The KHADC should therefore come up with a database of over 3000 trading licenses of non-tribals,” he said.
He took exception that some Khasi chiefs (syiem) issue no objection certificates (NOCs) despite not being authorized to do so. “Even headmen who issue NOCs should consult the Dorbar Shnong. For this, proceedings of the Dorbar Shnong are also needed,” he said.
Kharjahrin further said the KHADC should be stringent while issuing labour service licenses as well.
On the other hand, he urged the autonomous district council to deploy its enforcement wing personnel in other parts of Khasi Hills for easier and better inspection.
The HYC said meetings with the Khasi chiefs were part of its Save Hynniewtrep Mission initiative.
