Local food fest at Mawphlang

 NONGSTOIN: The Ionglajong NaRM-Group of Mawranglang in collaboration with KCRMS NERCORMP Nongstoin and the Slow Food Movement launched the 1st Local Food Festival showcasing the agro-biodiversity of Mawranglang village on Saturday.The festival was organized at Mawphlang.

More than 400 people from various SHGs and villagers from the surrounding villages took part in the event where more than 50 varieties of Khasi local food was displayed in the competi

tion. Amongst the treats on display were rice-based snacks like putharo, pukhlein, pu-syep, pu-maloi. However, the most delicious food was the Japih soup (local frog).

One of the stalls displayed food prepared out of Yam (shriew), Jakrai (millet rice), Jatlai (Sago palm flour)and Ja Phandieng (Rice Tapioca).

Rahul Antao and Annelie Bernhart representatives from the Slow food social movement were present at the Festival.

“Fast food is a primary cause for obesity and other eating disorders and the slow food movement opposes all food chains that standardise food, ’’Annelie a German based Italy member of the Slow food said, adding “We respect the originality of food and believe in enhancing its diversity. ”
