SHILLONG: The matter of denying admission to students from Meghalaya in Assam based medical colleges has been listed for hearing on September 11 in the Supreme Court.
Informing this here on Tuesday, Health and Family Welfare Minister, Roshan Warjri said that the case was filed in the Supreme Court on Monday and the Meghalaya Government has also prayed for inclusion of Medical Council of India (MCI) as a party in the matter.
It may be mentioned that every year total ten seats are allotted to Meghalaya students in three medical colleges in Assam – four seats in Guwahati medical college and Hospital, four in Assam Medical College and Hospital and two seats in Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
Lyngdoh added that the Meghalaya Government pays 10 lakhs per head for students of Meghalaya who undergo medical studies in these institutions.
“The whole problem cropped up because no communication was received from Assam Government regarding their new rule,” she told reporters.
On being asked if the filing of the case would further delay the admission for the students, she said the Meghalaya Government had no option even though the matter has been taken up at all levels.
It may be mentioned that the last date for admission of students was August 31 and now only the Supreme Court will take a call on the entire matter.
Earlier, Roshan Warjri met the aggrieved students who have been denied admissions in Assam and reaffirmed that the State Government was doing everything possible to address the matter.
The matter first came to the knowledge after students from Meghalaya had been denied admission by the Principals of the three medical colleges in Assam and the students then approached Meghalaya Government on the matter.
