SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has initiated repair work on the Umiam pavement on September 1, after almost two months of the broken structure lying unattended.
The authorities say the repair work on the pavement is expected to be completed soon.
The media has been highlighting the matter since the broken pavement was noticed in July.
The corporation in a statement on Wednesday clarified that the delay in carrying out repair work on the broken Umiam pavement was due to litigation.
Citing the reason for the damage of the pavement, the public relations officer of MeECL said that a Shillong-Tura bound night super bus ( AS01HC 2566) rammed into a footpath of the main Umiam dam around 6.30 pm on July 8, damaging 36 footpath slab covers across a distance of 15 meters, located on the spillway bridge chainage of the main Umiam dam.
“The vehicle was seized and a case registered at Umiam police station immediately after the incident,” the official said.
According to the official, other than the damage to the footpath slab covers, no other part of the structure of the dam was affected.
The official said it was not true that repair work was not carried out on road over the dam since October 2012. The road apparently has several potholes.
“The repair work was carried out from time to time, as and when it was required”, the official said.

Hanging wire rectified
The MeECL rectified the problem as highlighted in the photograph published in The Shillong Times regarding the overhead electric wire hanging precariously at Military Hospital road in city.
In a statement on Wednesday, the power corporation said, “In fact, the stay wire which has been uprooted by unknown persons has been rectified on September 5.”
