SHILLONG: The Ri Bhoi Students’ Union (RBSU), which was demanding removal of the deputy commissioner and the police super, said on Wednesday a tribal bureaucrat in the district would help locals communicate their grievances better.
The organisation argued that appointment of tribal bureaucrats in Ri Bhoi can end the language barrier between officers and the public.
“Illiterate villagers can meet the DC or the SP and talk about their grievances easily if there is a Khasi bureaucrat,” said RBSU president EJ Nongpluh.
“As of now, the district administration officials are non-tribals and this has created communication problems for residents here,” he said and added that locals now need a translator when they have to meet the DC or the SP.
RBSU is among the groups who are demanding that DC C.P Gotmare and SP Ramesh Singh be removed and a signature campaign was also held recently in support of this.
The group has also joined the KSU chorus demanding entry and exit points to check influx of immigrants.
Nongpluh said it would be difficult to implement the railway project without any stringent law to tackle illegal migrants.
However, to a query, he said raids on the houses of suspected KSU members have decreased.
