MAWKYRWAT: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has agreed to partly finance a Rs 25-crore road repair project in West and South West Khasi Hills districts.
The government project is being delayed because the state government has neither approved it nor has it given permission to KHADC to execute the project, a senior member of the Khasi Students Union’s South West Khasi Hills said on Thursday.
A delegation of KSU-South West Khasi Hills met the chief executive member of KHADC, PN Syiem, to seek clarification on the pending release of Rs 25 crore.
The repair work will start from Nongstoin (10 km) and the remaining 33 km is in Mawkyrwat and other divisions.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, the unit’s Assistant Education Secretary, Pulljohn Wanniang, said people of Wahkaji-Umdohlun area are facing problems due to the bad road condition, a result of neglect by successive governments.
“Locals are awaiting the package which was promised by the KHADC,” Wanniang said.
Wanniang said the CEM said, “For the benefits of people, KHADC has decided to give fund to the state government to execute the road project.”
Syiem also told the KSU that after receiving the fund under the Special Assistance Scheme of 2017-2018, KHADC would deposit it with the state government. “We will do this before the end of this year,” Syiem assured KSU.
