Journalists’ bodies condemn killing of Tripura scribe

GUWAHATI:  The National Union of Journalists India with Journalists Association of Assam, JAA and Journalist Federation of Assam (JFA) have strongly condemned the brutal murder of young journalist, Santanu Bhowmick (28), in Tripura and demanded exemplary punishment to the culprits involved in the incident.

Santanu Bhowmick, a young journalist of Agartala based cable TV news channel, Din Rat was killed by the miscreants on Wednesday at Mandai where he gone to cover the news of the political clash between two political parties, CPIM and IPFT.  Santanu, when he was covering the incident, was forced to be engaged in a scuffle with IPFT cadres who fatally beat him up with sticks.

NUJI President Ras Bihari and Secretary East Zone Bhupen Goswami condemned the killing of the young journalist and said termed it as failure of the administration to grant protection to the mediapersons. The NUJI reiterated its demand for a Journalists Protection Act to ensure safety and end impunity for attacks on journalists.

The Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) while strongly condemning the murder of the young TV journalist  in Tripura urged   Manik Sarkar- led Left Front government at Agartala to book the culprits immediately.

“Shantanu’s murder reminds the working journalists of northeast India about the insecurity they have to face every day on duty hours. One of the most shocking recent incident of journalists killing also took place in Tripura, when three media persons namely Sujit Bhattacharya, Ranjit Chowdhury and Balaram Ghosh were stabbed to death at Agartala in 2013,” said a JFA statement.
