SHILLONG: A team of   police officers from East Khasi Hills will leave for Karbi Anglong in Assam on Friday to ascertain if the five Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) cadres who were arrested in the area on Tuesday are wanted here in the district for any case.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak said that the police team from the district would do some basic interrogation of the five arrested cadres there in Karbi Anglong.

“If they are wanted in any of our cases, we will bring them here for necessary action,” Marak said.

On being asked if the HNLC is expanding its wings to other neighbouring states, Marak said that it was a possibility but nothing could be commented on the matter until and unless those cadres were interrogated.

He, however, said that there was no report of the banned HNLC regrouping in the East Khasi Hills, adding that their firepower, weaponry and activities remained more or less the same.

However, the district police were also concern if the HNLC had set up links with other banned outfits of Assam and police would try to   establish such links, if there was any.

The District Police chief also added that certain attempts were made by the HNLC to extort   from certain individuals and police was taking action against them.

According to Marak, as per the confessions of some surrendered HNLC cadres, the manpower of HNLC was less than 30 cadres at present

Marak   also added that there were certain inputs about HNLC trying to do some mischief in this year’s independence Day celebrations and accordingly police conducted checkings, naka checkings and security was intensified.

“We are taking anything related to militancy very seriously and we are on the job,” he said.
