GUWAHATI: The murder of the young TV journalist from Tripura, Santanu Bhowmick allegedly by activists of  Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) has once again brought to the fore the demand for a special protection law for journalist on duty in the country.

The media fraternity in the Northeast on Friday demonstrated their anguish against the murder of journalists across the country and reiterated their demand for a special protection law for journalists on duty across India.

The scribes under the banner of North East Union of Working Journalists (NEUWJ) gathered in front of Guwahati Press Club and raised demands for punishing the culprits who killed young journalist Shantanu Bhowmick in Tripura recently.

The demonstrators also urged the Manik Sarkar-led government at Agartala to compensate the bereaved family of Shantanu, who left behind his mother and only sister.

Prior to the protest-demonstration a meeting was also organized at the press club, where NEUWJ president Joykanta Sarma, general secretary Manoj Agasti with senior journalists Pulin Kalita, Nava Thakuria etc. were present. The meeting unanimously resolved demanding a special protection law for journalists on duty across India.

It may be mentioned that over forty journalists have been murdered in the conflict-ridden Assam by unidentified assailants so far and not a single culprit has been arrested by the law enforcing agencies in the state.
