IMPHAL: The Co-ordination Committee of the militant groups including KYKL, PREPAK, UNLF, KCP, RPF and UPPK (Pro) has called a 36-hour general strike beginning from 4 am of December 3 to boycott the visit of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to Imphal. The bandh will ends on 4pm of December 4.

In a statement, the militant Co-ordination Committee said the people of Manipur should not welcome the Indian leaders.

The people of Manipur have been deprived of the right to self-determination and sovereignty ever since they came under the clutches of colonial rule, committee added.

It said the Indian Government has introduced various divisive policies to disintegrate the unity of Manipur. Policies such as “Cease-fire without territorial limit” and “Supra-State body” are part of the divisive policies of the Indian Government.

Blaming that the issues of economic blockades and counter blockades arise from the colonial policies of India, the Co-ordination Committee said the people have been ‘underestimated’ by the Indian Government through mere grant meager development fund.

It also appealed to the people to render utmost support to boycott and bring forth the liberation movement of the region.

Meanwhile, Imphal West police commandos on Thursday conducted massive search operations in different areas of the city as part of preemptive measures being taken up ahead of the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi to the State.

Imphal West police commandos carried out search operations at Namdulong and Deulaland here around 10 am and picked up 26 persons who failed to prove identities, Deputy Superintendant of Police, S. Ibomcha told reporters. Gaipunam village near ISBT was also cordoned and conducted combing operation by the same commando team where another 10 persons were detained.

On Wednesday, three days ahead of the visit of PM Dr Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia’s Gandhi to Imphal, a powerful blast killed one person and five others got wounded.

The incident occurred at Hatta Kangjeibung in Imphal where the Manipur tourism festival ‘Sangai Festival 2011’ is being celebrated. (NNN)
