SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited has outstanding liabilities of over Rs 789 crore.
Power Minister Comingone Ymbon said on Thursday that the liabilities are mostly due to the outstanding dues to the power companies.
He also said that several villages are yet to pay outstanding dues to the tune of crores of rupees and the delay resulted in the government not being able to repair as many as 448 transformers in rural areas.
“Even then, we moved the Finance Department for money to repair as many as 300 transformers and at least Rs 5 crore is needed for this,” Ymbon said.
Recently, the State Cabinet decided to make the government a guarantor to deal with the outstanding loans of the cash-strapped MeECL.
Power ministers’ meet
The power ministers of all the northeastern states will meet in Shillong on October 10 and 11.
Ymbon said the State will present the current situation in terms of power purchase and other liabilities during the meeting.
