SHILLONG: Security has been beefed up along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya in the wake of a large number of Rohingya refugees migrating from Myanmar to Bangladesh.
An official from the Border Security Force (BSF) on Tuesday said additional manpower from the headquarters was being deployed along international border with Bangladesh in Meghalaya. The state shares a 443-km porous border with Bangladesh.
According to Border Security Force sources, the probability of Rohingya refugees crossing over to Meghalaya through the border was very less.
However, the paramilitary force, which is guarding the border, is not taking things lightly. Official sources said that BSF has strengthened its vigil since Meghalaya also shares a long border with Assam.
According to media reports, some 400,000 Rohingyas had taken refuge in Bangladesh over the past two decades and their number has almost doubled since the Myanmar Army launched a crackdown in Rakhine following militant attacks on police posts and an army base on August 25.
