‘Paul toppled MPA Govt’

SHILLONG: The proposed KHNAM-UDP merger has suffered a major body blow with majority of the UDP grassroots workers strongly opposed to the proposed merger.
The UDP workers are unhappy that KHNAM is merging with their party since it was Paul Lyngdoh who was responsible for toppling the previous MPA coalition Government in 2009 led by the UDP and the NCP.
Some UDP members are of the view that the KHNAM president owed an apology to the party for his resignation from the Government on March 10, 2009 which led to the downfall of the Government at that point of time.
The UDP workers further alleged that it was Lyngdoh who had misled HSPDP member Dr Advisor Pariong into resigning from the then Cabinet.
UDP members are also unhappy over the decision to award the party’s working president post to the KHNAM leader when there is already a working president (Bindo M Lanong) in the party.
Meanwhile, the KHNAM rebel group led by Pyndapborthiaw Saiborne lodged a complaint with the Chief Election Officer (CEO) P Naik on Friday.
The rebels also sent copies of the complaints to the Election Commission and also to Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope.
According to Saiborne, the dissolution of KHNAM during the General Council meeting on Saturday last was not legal since it does not met the requisite constitutional provisions of the party.
“We have urged upon the Election Commission not to recognise the dissolution of the party since it does not met the mandatory constitutional requirements of the party,” Saiborne said on Friday.
According to Saiborne, the primary units of the party in Khasi and Jaintia Hills were also not consulted before taking the decision to dissolve the party.
