SHILLONG: The Kiang Nangbah Government College Student’s Union, Jowai has threatened to stage an agitation if the state government fails to appoint permanent lecturers in the college in a month’s time.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the union’s president, Pyniar Dkhar said that the student’s union has apprised the school education and literacy minister Deborah C Marak of the matter by submitting a memorandum.
The student’s union expressed concern that at present, assistant lecturers in different departments was appointed on a contract basis for 59 days with an option for extension.
“This system has prompted some lecturers to resign once they get permanent posts in other colleges while students of the college find it very difficult to cope up with the situation, especially when exams were near,” Dkhar told reporters.
According to students, four lecturers have resigned from the college since July this year, and only one post was filled after two months.
During the meeting with the minister, the students were assured that the state government would take up their issue seriously.
“If the government does not fulfill our demand by appointing permanent lecturers in the college through the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) within one month, we will be forced to stage an agitation for the welfare of the students till necessary action is taken,” he said.
The students also rued that the government was yet to appoint a full-fledged principal, vice principal and different non-teaching staff in the college.
In addition, the union also demanded the state government to appoint three assistant lecturers for each department in the science stream, which includes physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology.
