SHILLONG: Concerns were raised on the failure of the state government to check trucks from other states doing brisk business in Meghalaya and this has prompted Meghalaya Commercial Vehicle Union (MCVU) to serve a one-week deadline to the state Transport department to tackle the matter.
The Union is confronted with problems where trucks from Rajasthan, Haryana, Nagaland etc., transport cement from Lumshnong, Jaintia Hills to Shillong even without obtaining regional permit, special permit to ply on the road despite possessing a national permit.
President of the union, Handle Mukhim has slammed the district councils asserting that they are not stringent with regard to checking of trading licenses, work permit, labour licenses.
“What is the meaning of having the United Khasi Jaintia Hills District (Trading by Non-Tribals) Regulation Act 1954 and 1959? They have not done anything in this matter,” he said.
He observed that the presence of commercial vehicles from outside the state posed a challenge to the tribal drivers which increase the problem of unemployment.
On the other hand, Mukhim that the rate of transportation of cement by trucks from Lumshnong to Shillong has decreased, violating the notification fixed by the government on approved rate which is Rs 1.25 per kg per quintal.
