PHE Dept agrees to realign pipe laying site of GSWSP

By Our Reporter

Shillong: The Public Health Engineering (PHE) department has agreed to realign the pipe laying site of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Project (GSWSP) (Phase III) at Mawphlang following a discussion between the experts from the PHE department and the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).

The construction of a 132 thousand volt electricity tower at Mawphlang has hampered the pipe laying work of Phase III of the GSWSS.

The issue is settled after five months of continuous brainstorming between the experts of PHE Department and the MeECL.

When contacted, Power Minister AT Mondal, who visited the site recently along with experts from the Power Grid and the PHE department, said “The matter has been settled and both the departments have agreed to adjust to the situation.”

“PHE department has agreed to realign the pipe laying site of the GSWSP Phase III more towards the west to avoid any collision with the said tower proposed to be set up near the site”, Mondal told The Shillong Times here on Monday. It may be reminded that the MeECL had constructed a 132 thousand volt electricity tower at Mawphlang without proper consultation with the PHE department.

The tower has become an obstacle for the Phase III of the GSWSS as the pipelines for the project are meant to pass through the same location where the tower is situated. Construction of this high voltage tower is seen a potentially dangerous in an area where already two big water pipe lines of Phase I and II were laid and further laying of pipes lines in the same area would pose great threat to the life of the people.
