SHILLONG: With incessant rains for the past few days in the city, power cuts have become a common trend. The people of Greater Laban faced repeated power cuts throughout Sunday. Even localities like Golflinks, Nongrah are no exception as power cuts occur daily which affected the citizens especially students who are having their exams.
There were complaints from the public that power went on and off like a tube light. There are questions doing the rounds that despite good rainfall this year and the Umiam dam is full to its tilt, where is the electricity ending up which is meant for the people of the state. There are opinions from the public that power cannot go on and off, uncountable times in a day, if there is no “foul play” by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd.
According to the affected people here, they haven’t experienced such a phenomenon in the past but this has become a trend or so in recent times.
The irked residents have criticised both MeECL and the Congress led government.
Many elderly people narrated how a power surplus state became power deficit in the last forty years due to the inaction of successive governments in the state.
