SHILLONG: Congress MP from Shillong Vincent H Pala on Monday allayed fears about Aadhaar stating that ‘there is nothing wrong with Aadhaar card’.
“There is no reason why we should object to Aadhaar and people should enroll for the same since it has been passed by the Parliament. Aadhaar is only a number like we have for our driving license, passport, voter’s ID. It is also the same….there is nothing much,” he told reporters.
Citing examples from other parts of the world, he said, “In America, they call it the security number, in China there is the identity card number and citizens in Europe also have their security number.”
On the apprehensions about Aadhaar infringing with the Right to Privacy, Pala said, “Debate is going on as the central government wants to link Aadhaar with bank accounts. There will be intrusion of privacy but we have to look at the merits and demerits.”
He said the state government should scrutinise the matter thoroughly in view of the Supreme Court directives to the state governments with regards to privacy.
“Within five-six months, everything will be made clear,” he said.
The MP also stated that he had brought to the notice of the Parliament the fact that states like Meghalaya were not ready for Aadhaar following which exceptions have been made for the state.
