SHILLONG: After a spurt in accident cases in parts of the city and on the outskirts, the East Khasi Hills police have drawn up an action plan to deal with the situation.
East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak on Monday said that after holding a review meeting, it was decided to drain out some traffic personnel, who are on duty during holidays, and deploy them during normal days.
“The plan is to thin out the traffic personnel during holidays and deploy them at night and also carry out mobile patrolling during the normal days when there is more traffic flow”, he said.
Another decision is to carry out surprise check of vehicles at certain locations in the city.
The SP also said that the police control rooms will also be activated to achieve the desired results.
“Those who man the CCTVs have also been asked to be more alert to report immediately about hit and run cases”, Marak said.
Citing a case, the SP said that on Monday morning after a hit and run case was reported from Madanrting, police responded immediately.
“Though police tried to stop the vehicle, it sped to Jowai, but since we knew the number plate, we finally detected the vehicle”, the SP said.
With less number of alcohometers, the East Khasi Hills police have written to police headquarters to purchase more equipment which would help the police in checking drunken driving.
“We have only one alcohometer each in the seven traffic branches in the city and we need atleast two each”, the SP added.
